This was my thesis, under David Anick (I graduated in 1989).  Both Mike
Hopkins and I wrote theses about this subject, and neither of us has
ever thought about it again.  The basic idea is that one should replace
the fat wedge that appears in the definition of category by a dual thing
called the "thin product".  It is a homotopy inverse limit.
